Sharis Shahmiryan – Honours BDes

A digital designer for Postmedia Network Inc, Canada's largest publisher of paid daily newspapers. Sharis started as a multidisciplinary designer for The Toronto Star, Canada's largest daily newspaper, and has taught Information Design and Drawing for Design part-time at York University. She began working for The Star as a summer student and was offered a full-time position immediately upon graduation from the York University/Sheridan Institute Joint Program in Design in 2007. Her design sensibility is strongly rooted in her Armenian upbringing; symmetry and delicate balance are a characteristic of Armenian art.
Her body of work has won national and international honours in news design. Sharis has been nominated for four National Newspaper Awards, winning an NNA in 2009 for Multimedia and in 2013 for a team Long Feature. Then in June of 2013, Sharis also won a National Magazine Award with The Feathertale Review team for their Issue No.9 of the annual review in the Best Single Issue category. She has won many awards from the Society of News Design including a prestigious portfolio award for her body of work in Feature Design. These awards are international and recognize beautiful feature pages, but also the innovative ways designers make breaking news come alive for readers. Applied Arts, the National design awards in Canada. Art Directors Club of Canada, another National Canadian Award honouring design excellence. Canadian Online Publishing Awards, for interactive graphics and a nomination for an International Data Award in 2012.
